Owatonna Girls Lacrosse team came into the game with smiles that lasted until the final whistle. The Huskies hosted Rochester Mayo on Apr. 22 and the scoring came easy for them. In almost the first thirty seconds of play, the team had already tallied a goal coming from midfielder Laura Ebeling. Then, the goals just kept coming from Owatonna as they had scored three times in under three minutes. At one point, the girls were averaging a goal per minute after scoring within 12 seconds.

On Saturday the team chemistry was clicking, as passes were connecting and leading to clean shots on net. “My mindset was that I was going to pass really well. I wanted to score, and help my teammates score too,” said Kenna West, an attacker who scored at least three times in their game against Mayo. The final score of the game was 20-1. Rochester Mayo’s offense was lackluster and only carried the ball into the Huskies’ defensive zone a handful of times, getting only a few shots on net. “I think as the season goes on we are really going to click together,” West added. The Owatonna Girls Lacrosse team is 3-2, and 2-0 in the Big 9 so far this season.

Last year, Owatonna was Big 9 champions led by a strong senior class. Since last year, this team has lost 13 seniors. The Huskies are looking to continue their success through the strong leadership from captains: Amy Oldenburg, Sophie Amundson and Ashley Beckman. The Huskies are also led by two new varsity coaches Dan Paur and Nate Gendron.  This new team will hope to continue last year’s success through new coaches and an entirely new starting lineup.

Mankato will host Owatonna tonight under pending weather conditions. Mankato is also sitting at 2-0 in the Big 9, and 3-1 overall this season. The game is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
