Journalism can arguably be labeled as the most innovative profession in the arts field in this day and age. Keeping this label means having dedication, creativity, passion and thinking outside of the box. The Owatonna High School student run newspaper, OHS Magnet, has all of these qualities with a little extra personality. Ever since Ms. Wagner took over in 2013, the newspaper has constantly been growing and changing.

Many great feats have been accomplished by 2016-2017’s Magnet staff of 26 students, some new and some returners. Since 2013, Magnet has gone to a full-time online publication. Accounts for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and Flickr have all been created since, and have built a large following. With only one year online under their belt, Magnet was named a Distinguished Site by School Newspapers Online. This is a high honor and puts Magnet in elite company.   This past year, Magnet has earned the badges for writing excellence, audience engagement, story page excellence, site excellence, continuing coverage and excellence in multimedia storytelling, earning the label of SNO Distinguished Site.

The 2016-2017 year is already looking like a great one for Magnet. With a majority of new staff bringing bright eyes and big ideas, new voices are already being heard. Kicking of the year by receiving the All-State Gold Award for 2015-2016 from Journalism Educators of Minnesota, this year’s OHS Magnet staff is ready to make countless more memories.
