After a rough start to the season, the Owatonna Girls Soccer team’s season has only gone up from there. The team’s record so far is 8-6-2.
The Huskies lost a handful of games in the beginning of the season and looked to change some things to figure out what was and was not t working. Head coach Nate Gendron said, “We made some adjustments and our schedule eased up a little bit and we hit our stride when we needed to and finished off really strong.” Overcoming adversity allowed for the Huskies to win multiple games and compete with tougher opponents. Senior captain Nevaeh Hofbauer said, “Ever since we beat Rochester Century we have been on a winning streak. We should be able to get past the first round of sections but after that we will have to regroup and figure out how we will get past the second round this year.”
This year Huskies lost many of their seniors so they had to rebuild their team with several younger players. Hofbauer said, “We have a very young team so we had to work our way through that and figure out how we’re going to get some wins this season.” Despite the team being very young, the Huskies still manage to work together very well as a team. Coach Gendron said, “Every player meeting I have had they have mentioned how the team is getting along well. Our team is very cohesive and we play together as one.”
The Huskies have overcome their inexperience and created a better and more stable team. Girls soccer is now entering section playoffs. The Owatonna Girls soccer team was placed as the fifth seed in section 1AAA.
The Huskies play Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Rochester Century High School.
