The Owatonna High School Girls Swim and Dive team competed in their section meet last week. The divers competed Thursday, Nov. 9, which resulted in junior diver Mya Dutton qualifying for state. Dutton placed fourth in the section meet, securing her spot at state. This is Dutton’s second time qualifying for state in diving. She has been involved with swimming and diving from a young age and found success in diving because of her background competing in both gymnastics and swimming.
Overall, the season has been very successful for the Owatonna Swim and Dive team. Assistant coach Tara Lammers said, “Both teams really bonded over the season and it was cool to see them cheer for each other and come together as a team.” Dutton had been placing high all season, including a fourth place finish in the Big 9 Conference Meet. Head diving coach Kasey Anderson said, “Mya had an incredibly consistent section meet. She’s a calm and dedicated diver. She knew what she needed to do going into the section meet and performed well. She has continued to practice hard and keep a calm demeanor through this week’s practices.” Coach Anderson is looking forward to Dutton competing at state.
Going into her second state meet, Dutton is not too nervous. Dutton said, “I am pretty calm, the first time I went to state I was very nervous but this time I am feeling more calm and confident.” Dutton will compete this Thursday, Nov. 16, at 6:00 p.m at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
