A dive into the Owatonna Boys Swim and Dive season

The team started their season right after Thanksgiving break, with some members of the team preparing for the season by taking advantage of the swim club in town. They had their first meet on Dec. 11. The team has competed in four dual meets so far, along with three invites, making their season record 4-0. This is their most successful season in the last ten years and they hope to end the season with a record of 6-2.

Coach Rhodes is very proud of how the team has been doing this season.

He said, “I am very proud of the team. Swimming is a difficult sport. They go through some truly grueling workouts. What makes swimming fun is the people that you go through hard things with and come out on the other side.”

This year’s captains are seniors Carter Quam, Henry Hilgendorf and Matthew Larson. They have done a great job leading the team and adapting to fewer teammates since they have a smaller team compared to last year. They have some big goals that they would like to accomplish this season. They would like to place higher than they did last season at the conference meet.

Their goal is to place 4th at the conference meet, along with being able to send their 200 free relay to state and hopefully having at least two individuals qualifying for state as well.

With so many graduating seniors this year, they will need more athletes to cover the holes that will be left next season.

Coach Rhodes said, “If anyone has ever thought about swimming or diving before, they should give it a try. Swimming is a skill that can save your life or others around you. It is great exercise and there is always a place for every athlete on the team. We do not cut, everyone competes.”

The Huskies have their next meet on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 at Mankato East High School.
