Turning through the season

Owatonna Dance Team will be hosting a community show on Saturday, Feb. 3

The Owatonna Dance team has seen a lot of success this season. This is the team’s seventh season for OHS, they continue to work and impress every year. ODT is excited to showcase all of its amazing skills this season with about 40 girls on the team this year.

The first dance competition of the season was the Burnsville Invite that was held on Nov. 18. The varsity kick was the only team representing ODT. This was an exciting competition for ODT as this opportunity was able to showcase their skill with the biggest kick team ever as of this year, the team placed third at the Burnsville invite.

On Dec. 2, was the first competition of the season all of Owatonna’s teams competed. This competition was a big deal as it was the first big competition and all teams came home finishing in first place. This was a huge success and a great way to start the season.

On Dec. 9, the dance team would go on to make history after hosting their first-ever big competition. This would be a very exciting competition as ODT was able to showcase all of the team’s hard work in their hometown gym. The competition resulted in ODT placing first in four events with the support of their hometown crowd. Senior captain Jaedynn Tjon said,  “Having that home advantage, making ODT history, and getting to be a part of the process.” This was an extraordinary and memorable competition for ODT. Shortly after the home competition on Dec. 21, ODT had the great opportunity and exposure to more hometown fans performing as the halftime show at the basketball game.

As ODT has many more exciting competitions coming up Junior Captain Kennedy Katzung said, “The rest of the season includes four more competitions including Big 9 next Friday, a Timberwolves halftime performance, and our annual community show.”

Their next competition was Big 9, where they placed first in jazz, and third in kick. This placed ODT as second overall in the Big Nine conference. Head Coach Nicole Gefre said, “My favorite part of the big nine was walking off the floor with the team after they finished performing kick. The energy in that gym, the attack the dancers had throughout the whole performance and all the moments that just went so right was exactly what we needed.” Big 9 was a very successful competition for ODT.

Another very exciting performance for ODTw as they will perform as the halftime show at the Timberwolves game on Wednesday, Jan.31. Junior Captain Chloe Walerius said, “I am excited for other people who aren’t familiar with us to see our faces and to get our town and name out there more.” So many great performances and opportunities ODT has had so far this season. Section’s is just around the corner for ODT. On Feb. 10th. The team will head to Bloomington Kennedy High School for the section competition.
