The Owatonna Boys Tennis team has started their season off strong with a 3-0 record. Their matches have included some big wins, with victories including Rosemont and Faribault. Their success so far has come from their great team depth.
The Huskies this year have had to face some adversity having a fairly younger team with only five seniors and losing their number one singles player Thomas Herzog right before the season. Head coach Curt Matecjek said, “I’m looking forward to seeing the team keep improving throughout the season. We have some new players in the varsity lineup and I am excited to see their growth.” The Huskies are facing this adversity by working hard in order to improve every day and reach their goals.
A big part of the Huskies success so far has been the doubles team of junior captain Finn Loveless and senior Leyton Williams. The doubles team is undefeated and is looking like one of the best doubles teams in the state. Junior captain Finn Loveless said, “A lot of guys put in a ton of time in the off-season and have gotten a lot better so during the season we are focusing on playing to our abilities in every match and working towards our team goals.” The team is setting high goals this year and with their off-season work are hoping to achieve them.
With the Huskies hot start they are looking to keep this momentum to compete with the best teams in the state. Matecjek said, “Our hope is that we are competitive and we are playing our best tennis come section tournament time.” The Huskies have high hopes for a deep playoff run and are improving every day in order to achieve it.
The Huskies are looking to keep their undefeated season going. The Huskies will play their next match on Thursday, April 11 at Owatonna High School at 4:30 p.m. taking on the Rochester Mayo Spartans.
