The Owatonna Girls Varsity Soccer team has had a successful 2024 season so far. They are led by Head Coach Nate Gendron and assisted by Coach Tony Cloud and Coach Jeremy Wood. The girls have put lots of time in and have worked hard to accomplish their goals. The girls’ record is 8-4-1.
The Huskies have had a winning season, working hard and making the most of their opportunities. They have put hours of work in to get to where they are today. Coach Gendron said, “We don’t give up, and we have found a system that works for us.” The Huskies have faced some adversity with injuries but have bounced back and continued to fight.
The soccer team is made up of 23 girls with 11 of them being seniors. Looking at next year, the team will have changes happening because of the loss of seniors. Luckily, the team’s starters are a mix of young and old.
The girls are working hard this year to create great team chemistry. Senior Captain Kelli Waypa said, “I think we have an excellent connection with the team and just know them on a personal level but also play very well with each other.” The girls and coaches have worked hard to make the best team they can have.
The girls are currently on a streak of five shutouts in a row. Coach Gendron said, “Our defense has been playing great as a three-back.” The girls are sitting at first in the Big 9 section. They have faced many tough teams so far but plan on continuing to push through. The team has two more regular season games with hopes of winning Big 9.
Sections start on Oct 8th for the girls. Pending the girls’ last two games and sessions ranking will determine their placing for sections and if they play home or away.
The Huskies’ next game is at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Soccer Complex.
