The OHS Girls Volleyball team had a home game on Sept. 19 at 7:15 p.m against the Winona Winhawks. As of Sept. 19, 2024, it has been four months since the passing of student Olivia Flores. At their game, the volleyball team recognized the passing of Olivia Flores by writing “LLO” on their hands and legs, which stands for “Long Live Olivia.” Flores was a senior at OHS last year and her life was cut short due to a car accident on May 19, 2024. Junior captain Kendra Bogen said, “We decided to do the ‘LLO’ on our legs as a team because it was four months of her passing.”
OHS has celebrated Flores in other ways. After the accident, students created shirts saying “Live life to the fullest” on the back and the front saying “Live strong.” Other ways the school has celebrated Flores’ life are having a moment of silence during commencement and an open chair at graduation for her. The OHS Varsity Cheer Coach Jenna Compton created a banner for Flores in front of the student section at football games too. The counseling department offered sessions this past summer to help students struggling with her passing.
The Owatonna vs. Winona game went well for the team, with some of Flores’ family supporting and cheering on the team during the game. Bogen said, “We thought it would be a great way to honor her and her family knowing that they have been supporting the volleyball team throughout the season.” Senior captain Carley DeWitz said “The game against Winona went very well for our team. We won in 3 sets which was good to see because finishing strong has been something we have been working on.” The volleyball team took home a win for the Huskies 3-0 against the Winona Winhawks.
The Huskies play their next game on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7:15 p.m. at Rochester John Marshall.
