The Owatonna Boys Cross Country Team is set to have another significant year. Last year, the team did not finish how they wanted to. They ended up not finishing in the top three in the Big 9 or Sections. However, they did send two people to state, former junior Jack Sorenson and former senior Leyton Williams. The team is coached by Head Coach Luke Holt for the second year.
The team has a positive outlook on how they will finish this year. Head Coach Luke Holt said, “The season has been up and down for the boys cross country team to this point. We raced extremely well at our first couple of meets, and then we have been dealing with some sickness and injuries with some of the athletes on our team. Overall, they are overcoming adversity extremely well, and we should be getting healthy for the end of the season when they can start racing fast when it matters most.” The team is working hard to bounce back better than ever.
The team is expecting to reach big goals this year, with a couple of meets already completed. Coach Holt said, “The goals for the season are to have two guys qualify for the State meet individually by finishing in the top eight at the Section meet and to finish in the top two teams to grab a State qualifying spot as a team.” With a determined mindset, the team plans on achieving many things this season.
This team is working hard and doing everything they can to achieve these goals. Motivation and support from the team is essential to the boys cross country team. Senior captain Jack Sorenson said, “Reminding them of their goal and that this is what they have worked all summer for [is important].” The OHS Boys Cross Country team is striving for excellence as they finish their season.
The Huskies next meet is home on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. at Brooktree Golf Course.
