On Monday, Oct 7 at 6 p.m. the National Honor Society held its annual Induction ceremony for new members. The ceremony recognized the new members of the organization who have achieved academic excellence and possess exceptional leadership skills throughout the school and community. The well-known organization originated in 1921 in order of respecting their four pillars: Service, scholarship, leadership, character. In order to be accepted into NHS, juniors needed to have a minimum of a 3.75 GPA and seniors a 3.6 GPA.
The ceremony involved four speakers representing each historic pillar of NHS. This year’s speakers were seniors Afton Torabpour, Lilly Trager, Hannah Parish and Sofia Escobedo. Each speaker educated the incoming generation on the importance of NHS through their specialized pillar. After the speakers, each new member’s names were announced along with their parents’ names as they walked across the stage. While on the stage the new inductees signed the NHS Record book which has been signed by each new NHS member since the 1980s. Members also were congratulated by Principal Kath and handed their official certificate.
In addition to the aforementioned speakers was a keynote address from Kristina Rohman, head of the English Department at OHS. She spoke on the importance of each member leaving their “snapshot” for the next generation. The entire event was planned by the NHS leadership team. Each member has a valuable position towards the prestigious organization. By expanding the NHS family, many new opportunities will come out of this school year. President of NHS, senior Lauren Nelson said, “ I’m excited for a lot of new people to join because we’ll be able to do a lot more for the community.”
Once the ceremony was concluded, cookies and fellowship followed with the new 2024-2025 NHS family.
