On Sep. 19, Netflix came out with a show called “Monsters.” This show is about the Menendez brothers who murdered their parents in cold blood. It is currently placed third in the top ten shows on Netflix.

The show is about two brothers who killed their parents under suspicious circumstances involving abuse. The two main characters are Erik Menendez, played by Cooper Koch, and Lyle Menendez, played by Nicholas Alexander Chavez. With the popular Netflix show, much speculation has come out about the brother’s intent to murder. According to Erik Menendez, the main reason they killed their father was because of “terror” and “fear.” Their mother, Kitty Menendez, knew the heinous acts their father did towards the brother, but did not do anything to prevent the ongoing abuse towards the boys. Erik Menendez said, “She told me she knew. She knew that she had known all my life about what my father was doing.” 

The show brings much attention to the Menendez case with the heightened issue of two brothers getting physically abused by their father. The show “Monsters” has caused vocal controversy towards the show because of its graphic topics about the brothers’ relationships with their parents. Deciphering how realistic the show is towards the actual event. An article by Desert News stated, “There are people who say that never happened. There were people who said it did happen.”

After a public trial in 1996 and years behind bars, the Menendez scandal is still talked about to this day. Currently, the brothers are facing life in prison without parole for killing their parents. The brothers reunited in the same prison in 2018. With more information being reviewed, interest rates towards the case have risen due to the Netflix series “ Monsters.”
