During homecoming week and other weeks throughout the year, the OHS Student Council organizes dress-up days. Owatonna High School’s celebratory dress-up days start with homecoming. Dress-up days are a fun way of supporting an event going on at OHS. Principal Mr. Kory Kath said, “I think it’s all about building community, having some fun and when everyone is kind of dressed up in the same theme, it shows that you are dedicated or committed to school spirit.”
Mr. Kath said that the student council advisers work with students each time to generate ideas for the dress-up days. Mr. Kath said, “I do not always know. They usually get them to me about a month or two ahead of whatever the event is, but they brainstorm a bunch of them. So if anybody has ideas, they should share them with any of the student council members.”
Everybody has their own opinion about dress-up days, especially the students. Senior Taylor Kalbach said, “I mean, I like them. They’re good for student morale, I guess. And they’re just a fun thing to do.” Kalbach said he enjoyed the movie day and hopes to see more days like this in the future.
Dressing up to a certain theme is an interactive way for the OHS student body to get involved in school spirit. But dressing up for school events is not everyone’s thing. Junior Noah Mazariego said, “I like them, but I only really do them to get points in choir.” Mazariego enjoyed Husky Day and Bank Day because they were easy.
OHS faculty and students enjoy a quick and easy way to dress up for celebrated weeks. Dress-up days remain a beloved tradition but a personal choice that is offered to every individual at OHS.
