When the topic of climate change is brought up most people tend to think of polar bears floating on melting ice in the arctic. Climate change is when there are shifts in temperature and weather patterns. Humans are the biggest contributors to the issue due to the excessive burning of fossil fuels.
Natural disasters can also be linked to climate change such as severe droughts in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. As well as natural disasters such as Australian wildfires, South Asia Floods and dry seasons in Central America. Recently, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee have all been struck by hurricane Helene. Due to temperatures being warmer and winds boosting 13 miles per hour because of the hurricane, weather stages are being altered. Making heat fronts affect storms’ harshness levels.
Environmental Activists have taken initiative in a multitude of different ways. The biggest one is the climate clock. The Climate Clock is located in New York, Seoul, Berlin, Rome and Glasgow. It serves as a reminder that soon it’ll be harder to take action. Senior Hamdi Moalim said, “It feels very dystopian that there is a clock counting on how long we have to save the planet.” Currently, the clock is under the five-year mark. Several wonder what would happen if the clock reaches zero.
The Just Stop Oil is a British movement founded in 2022 that brings attention to human-caused climate change. Causing a group of protesters to vocalize their concerns nationally. In Britain, two protesters threw orange powder on the historical structure Stonehenge. Both individuals were arrested but later released on bail. It is believed they targeted this site because it is popular and locating would help spread more awareness.
Taking action is a responsibility everyone should take upon themselves. Junior Nicole Yciano said, “It is a big issue in our world, we should take action and do whatever we can to help save our planet.”
It is crucial to research ways that people can reduce the effects of climate change such as saving energy at home, walking to places, eating more veggies, throwing away less food and switching to electric-powered vehicles. With it being such a national issue, the result will involve all members of society to fix.
