As winter is approaching, many athletes are beginning to think about tryouts or have already had tryouts. Tryouts come with lots of stress for everyone. The thought of trying out can make many nervous and stressed. This can cause students to perform poorly or, in some cases, very well if certain students perform well under stress. Sophomore Grace Mitchel said, “My freshman year, it caused me a lot of stress, and it made me get in my head and not on my A game.”
Many students will go into panic mode, thinking they can’t do it and won’t make the team. Freshmen come into tryouts with no prior knowledge on how to tryout for a high school sport. Causing it all to be a stressful situation. Freshman Josiah Thompson said, “[When trying out] I was nervous, and it put a lot of pressure on me, as I wanted to make the top team.”
Athletes put many hours into their sports and try to do their best. In tryouts, students need to perform their best and trust their own amount of hours put in to perform. Trying out is a good experience that can give many useful takeaways to students. Junior Jessica Fisher said, “It takes a lot of work to play at the high level expected of you.”
After going through many tryouts as a senior, students understand the ropes and become someone a younger athlete can look up to during this stressful time. Senior Lauren Busho said, “I have learned that you need to work hard and show the skills that you have.” Through tryouts, teammates begin to learn what the coaches want and how to make others around them collectively work their best as one team.
