According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency the average American produces about 4.9 pounds of waste. That is why it is important to correctly get rid of waste in order to reduce pollution, save energy and conserve natural resources. America Recycles Day is a national event celebrated on Nov. 15 every year. It is dedicated to promoting and encouraging recycling across the United States. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of recycling.
America Recycles Day is an opportunity to learn more about how everyone could contribute to a sustainable future and protect the earth. Junior Sophia Cook said, “I use reusable water bottles because it is a simple way to protect our planet.”
The first national America Recycles Day was held in Nov. 15, 1997. This event kicked off a nationwide campaign to promote recycling and educate people about its importance. Since then, it has become an annual event where communities across the country unite to raise awareness.
At least 40 states took part in the first America Recycles Day, hosting various activities including recycling fairs, compost demonstrations, art from discarded materials, games and prizes. Through different activities and initiatives, the day motivates individuals to incorporate recycling into their daily lives.
Recycling, when done correctly is an easy way to cut down on waste. According to the Waste Management and Recycling Services, there are three basic rules to follow. The first rule is to recycle bottles, cans, paper and cardboard. Second, keep food and liquids out of the recycling bin. Third, avoid placing loose plastic bags and bagged recyclables in the bin.
Additionally it is important to clean and dry recyclables before placing them in the bin. Food residue can spoil entire batches of recyclables, making them unusable. It is also crucial to break down cardboard boxes to save space and ensure they are properly processed. By following these guidelines, each person can contribute to a more efficient and effective recycling system, helping to preserve the environment for future generations.
America Recycles Day serves as an important reminder of the impact each individual can make by incorporating recycling into their daily lives. By participating in events and activities, such as America Recycles Day communities can come together to promote and educate others about the benefits of recycling.
Science teacher Mr. Dennis Will said, “This is our only home. We have to take care of it.” By following the basic rules of recycling and ensuring that recyclables are clean and properly sorted can significantly enhance the efficiency of the recycling process. Through collective efforts, each individual can contribute to a sustainable future and help preserve the environment for generations to come.
