During the week of Nov. 18-22, OHS Student Council had an opportunity to change the cash drive tradition and replace it with a new week called “OHS Give Week.” The OHS Student Council chose to change this because for some people it is a lot easier to help with acts of kindness, time or materials, rather than money.
Throughout the week,, OHS had classes donate different things that are needed, like winter clothes or food. Teachers also gave out kindness tickets whenever they saw a student doing something kind.
Monday at OHS, there was a pep fest to kick off the week. There was a raffle to play Plinko for prizes and a Dash For Cash with the incentive being a teacher got pied in the face. OHS Student Council Historian Emery Vick said, “The goal of OHS Give Week was to give back to our community and to provide kids with opportunities to donate and volunteer.” OHS raised over $1,500 during the Dash For Cash.
Tuesday, there was a classroom competition to see who brought in the most cereal for Community Pathways. Students brought in cereal to their first hour classes. They collected a total of 586 boxes and bags of cereal. These will be donated to Community Pathways. The class who brought in the most cereal got Old Town Bagels on Nov. 20. Two classrooms were rewarded, Ms. Magdaleno-Garcia’s and Ms. Michele Ulferts’s.
On Wednesday during Compass, there were various activities like making cards, making blankets and raking leaves. The activities were collaborations with other clubs like Key Club, Best Buddies, YOLO and Thriving Minds.
On Thursday, students had a chance to donate a toy to Toys For Tots. There was a raffle for AirPods.
To finish it off Friday, there was a coat and sock drive where students could donate coats and socks to the Husky Pantry.
Adviser Ms. Michaela Kruger said, “I’ve been blown away. I am really proud as a staff member to see the impact that our kids are choosing to make, and I think that says a lot about the character of our students and the support that we have for our community.”
Ms. Kruger said their goal was achieved and Community Pathways Executive Director Mr. Dom Korbel was thrilled and proud. Students have gone above and beyond what anyone could have hoped. Ms. Kruger said that the one thing that could have gone differently is having more opportunities and activities during Compass.
Ms. Kruger believes that Give Week has been really positive for the community. It was an opportunity to show that OHS has great students who are proud to give back to the community.
OHS Give Week provided many activities and opportunities to give back to the community. Blankets were made, cards were written and toys were donated, warming the hearts of all at OHS.
