The Owatonna Boys Hockey team has been hitting the ice hard. The team is coached by head coach Dennis Will and assisted by Justin Fletcher, James Wagner, Devin Laiho and Paul Martinson. The team is currently four games into the season, and their record is 2-2.
The team is made up of 34 players with two teams, JV and varsity. The team has many new faces after losing 13 seniors last year. The team hopes to go far this year while working hard and having fun with many big accomplishments.
Senior captain Andy Mitchell said, “[The goal is to] win the Big 9 and split or sweep both Northfield and Century.” The team has played hard in their first four games. The team continues to put in the work on and off the ice with collective determination.
The OHS Boys Hockey team opened up their season at home on Nov. 26 playing New Prague. The match ended in a 3-5 loss for the Huskies. It was a good game, but the team was unable to come out with the victory they wanted.
The team then traveled to Tartan which resulted in a 4-2 win. The team came back after Thanksgiving break and hosted Faribault. This game resulted in an 8-1 win for Owatonna. There were a few players that took advantage and got their first career goals.
The team then traveled to Rochester Lourdes, working hard but ending in a 1-5 loss. With much of the season left, there are always areas to be improved on.
Coach Will said, “We have a lot of young kids so trying to get them to play at the varsity level, to understand it a lot faster, positions and all that. We just want to keep getting better.”
The team’s next home game is Dec 10. at the Steele County Four Seasons Arena. JV will play at 5 p.m. followed by varsity at 7 p.m.
