Owatonna Girls Basketball just began the back half of their season. The girls have been having a great season, being first in the Big 9 with a record of 15-4. They are currently on a 13-game winning streak led by their four captains, Abby Shornock, Lexie Klecker, Maryn Pool and Ava Olson.
Shornock said, “Trust has led our team to a winning streak. Trusting each other on offense and defense has been crucial. Establishing our defense and getting to our rotations has also been important, leading us to be third in the state for defense.”
The girls’ success has been astonishing this season with a big win over Delano with a final score of 63-48. Delano is ranked ninth in class 3A in the state of Minnesota. The Huskies have also beaten other strong teams like Rochester Mayo and Austin. The girls recently beat Austin 54-52 with a half-court game-winner from Pool who was assisted by Shornock. This was a comeback game for the Huskies who lost to Austin earlier in the season.
Pool said, “It felt so surreal. As a team, that was a win we all wanted so badly. We pushed through the whole game and never gave up. It just goes to show how important it is to play through the final buzzer.”
With all the hard work and time put into practice, the team looks to finish the season strong. Assistant coach Pat Churchill said, “It’s a great accomplishment for them to not lose a game for over a month. It’s a rather impressive feat. It just kind of shows their focus, their work ethic and their dedication to each other is pretty impressive right now.” The Huskies are looking to continue their winning streak by any means necessary.
In their next game, Owatonna Girls Basketball will be playing Winona on Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at OHS.
