“Here we go again.” The Owatonna High School Theater department is pleased to announce that this year’s musical will feature another great theme: Momma Mia.
These students involved in the production of Mamma Mia at Owatonna High School have committed themselves to a strenuous rehearsal schedule. They rehearse everyday afterschool with added weekend rehearsals and even morning workout sessions to build up stamina and endurance for their performances. These students balance school, extracurricular activity and late hours of rehearsal for the same shared goal of performing a memorable show, which takes massive commitment and self-discipline.
Owatonna High School has produced musicals for several years, but this production is unique in comparison. Mamma Mia is a jukebox musical incorporating familiar popular music rather than written music specifically created for the output. This production creates a unique kind of energy as familiar songs, active choreography and flashy light effects are all great ingredients for both performers and spectators who watch the musical. OHS Sophomore Justice Moots, who is back onstage for her second school musical, plays Sophie Sheridan, a role known for charm, curiosity and determination.
Acting in the musical for Moots is a blending of her passions for acting and music, and experiencing the musical is the ultimate blend of both worlds. Offstage, she enjoys the camaraderie created by being a cast member. Having close bonds with her fellow actors and participating in the artistic process. Looking ahead to another year of rehearsals, lively performances and storytelling, Moots is looking to bring Sophie’s story to life and share it with audiences by offering them the magic of Mamma Mia! Moots explained, “The first night is always a mix of things; you are nervous, you are excited, just every emotion is running high, but because I have done theater for a couple of years now, it is pure excitement.”
Opening night is drawing near for the cast and crew of Mamma Mia! They are ready to perform a performance with energy, passion and moments that will be attached in memory long after the curtain falls. The first performance to the public is Thursday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m., and the following dates when the show is being performed are March 1 at 7:00 p.m., March 2 at 1:30 p.m., March 6 at 7:00 p.m., March 7 at 7:00 p.m. and March 8 at 7:00 p.m.
