The OHS Prom Committee works tirelessly to make prom magical every year, but how do they pull this off?
The Prom Committee meets in the mornings or after school on compass days. However, this year they had a later start to their meetings because of the few compass days the school missed this year due to weather. During these meetings, they will discuss positions in the prom committee, decide themes, talk about how they will decorate accordingly, put out ideas for the stops and so much more.
Last year, “The Great Gatsby” theme was mentioned, but in the final decision, it was not the one they chose; however, this year the decision was unanimous to the “Gatsby” theme so prom goers can anticipate a lavish and glamorous atmosphere heavily influenced by the 1910’s style of art deco.
Each head of the Prom Committee is responsible for a photo opportunity or something known as a “stop.” This person makes sure that all the decorations for that stop are ordered on time and then they choose members from the prom committees who will help them with their stop. Senior Prom Committee head Kennedy Katzung said, “I love prom committee because of the creativity and coming together with my classmates. Missing school is also a plus.”
The Prom Committee sets up on the Wednesday and Thursday before prom. Friday is used as an extra day to make sure everything is completed. This will all take place at the Four Seasons Centre during the school day. On the day of prom, committee members go early to make sure everything is set up and ready to go. Later in the day, they get assigned to different “stops” where they will help take pictures and escort people to their seats. When the grand march is over, committee members start taking the decorations down so that the Four Seasons can return back to normal.
Last year, after the grand march, prom goers were surprised with a Kona Ice truck and bottled water. This year, the dance will have a Kona Ice truck, a coffee truck and a surplus of bottled water.
The after-prom will be held at the high school this year. In addition, Buffalo Wild Wings, Pizza, Candy, desserts, pop and water will all be available for sale. As for entertainment, U2 Entertainment, virtual reality, casino tables, inflatables, a hypnotist, a magician and more will be part of the fun.
