The Owatonna Girls Golf team is midway through the season and has a current standing of second in the Big 9 conference. The team looks to improve individually and as a team throughout the season. The team has made weeks of preparation and are excited to showcase their talent and determination on the greens.
With the Huskies currently second in the Big 9, they are hoping to give it one last push before the end of the regular season. Senior Alia Kubicek said, “It feels really good to be 2nd in the conference. We’ve worked really hard all season and it’s nice to see the effort pay off.”
There are many stand out players that have showcased their hard work throughout the season. Some of those players include captains Anna Mollenhauer, Paige Thompson, and Carmen Jirele. These players have really worked hard individually to give themselves a title of being a great captain and athlete. Senior Captain Anna Mollenhauer said, “It feels really good to be a captain and knowing that people look up to you and it’s just super fun because you can interact with so many people.”
Junior Carmen Jirele was recently placed on the ‘Home of Champions Sign” that is placed just off of multiple main roads here in town. She achieved this by winning the class AAA individual state championship last year. Jirele said, “I was shocked knowing I had made history and will be a part of the community for years to come.” Jirele also mentioned how the Owatonna community was spectacular because she did not know that Owatonna showcases titles like this. This made her realize that all her hard work and training paid off for the previous season.
Each player brought out their hard work and dedication which is shown through each meet. The team looks forward to bettering themselves during each meet and practice. They also look into the future with hopes to build their success as a team and goals to gain another title of a state champion, which leads the team into working even harder to reach this goal of a state championship title.
The Big 9 tournament is coming up fast, leaving the team with only weeks to prepare for this huge meet. The ultimate goal for the Big 9 tourney is to place in the Big 9 tournament and gain the title of champions. Junior Captain Paige Thompson’s goal for Big 9 is to, “Try for new personal bests as individuals and as a team.”
The next home tournament for the Owatonna Girls Golf Team is the Big 9 tournament on Tuesday, May 20 at 10 a.m. against all schools in the Big 9 at the Owatonna Country Club (OCC).
