With boys tennis hitting the halfway point of their season, the team hopes to make a strong finish to the season. The team is led by their Head Coach Curt Matecjek and senior Captains Joe Zeman, Thomas Oien and Finley Loveless. The Owatonna Boys Tennis Team is currently 5-3 and are in a strong position to get a good seed come section tournament time.
The team has many goals for the season. Loveless’s personal goal is to, “try to win as much as possible, so that the team can rely on Joe and I to get our point for the match.” With the team being young this year, Loveless and Zeman are the team veterans and are expected to win all of their matches this year.
The Huskies have played some solid opponents to start the season. Some of those teams include Rochester Century and Rochester Mayo. With Mayo being ranked third in the state for tennis, it was a good test for the Huskies to see where they are at in the state. Owatonna would go on to lose to both of these teams, but put up a good fight in each. Loveless said, “We played good tennis and made them earn the win.” Owatonna also picked up a solid win against Mankato East with a final score of 6-1.
Head coach Curt Matecjek has been impressed with the team and the hard work the tennis team is putting in so far. Matecjeks highlight so far has been, “how hard everyone has been working in practice to improve and the many close and exciting matches we have played so far.” Matecjek continued, “finish in the top third in the conference and to get to the section final four.” Matecjek has been coaching for 30 years now. His favorite part about coaching the tennis team is “working and building relationships with student-athletes and the energy they bring to practice and on match days.” The Huskies are looking forward to finishing the season strong and capitalize on the goals Matecjek has set for the team.
The tennis team’s next match is a triangular at Faribault on Saturday, May 3 at 9 a.m.
