The Owatonna baseball team is midway through its season and has had an awesome start with a current record of 9-2. The Huskies have put in immense work throughout the season so far in achieving this record. They practice every day after school and have games on the days that they do not have practice and along with morning lifts. Each win is a reflection of their hard work.
The team is coached by Mr. Tate Cummins, who is in his 18th year of coaching the baseball team. Cummins is the head coach for the varsity team and is assisted by Mr. James Dahlgren as the assistant coach for the team. Both coaches put in an immense number of hours to better the team, continue the growth of the program and the development of all the players. Coach Cummins shared that his goals as a coach are, “To help players understand what it takes to be a great teammate. Helping one another in any way possible and truly caring for one another.”
Cummins added that he does not think about his legacy, he mainly thinks of the entire coaching staff and what they, together, want to leave behind. He said, “Hopefully people remember that we show up everyday with energy, a great plan on ways to improve, give 110% every practice/game, that we continue to respect the game, and have a great time doing it.”
The team has their first round of sections on May 26th; the time and date are still to be determined. Most of the players have hopes to make it far in sections and win their 4A section title as in recent years the team has struggled to find success. Senior outfielder Andy Mitchell’s goals include, “To win a section chip and go to state and to work hard everyday and build on every win.”
In the 2025 season for the baseball team, they have many returning players which gives them an advantage and a huge confidence boost for the upcoming year since they have players that know how to play the game of baseball. The team has 11 returning players for the year, 10 being seniors and one being a sophomore.
The Huskies had an amazing win against the Mankato East Cougars early in the season on April 15th, which pushed them to work even harder and prepare as they meet up with the Cougars for the second time on May 1st. The Cougars have a record of 8-3, and the Huskies took the win over the Cougars with the score for the game being 5-1.
The Owatonna Huskies Baseball team has their next home game on May 6 at Dartts Park at 5 p.m. against the Rochester Century Panthers.
