Supercell is a Finnish mobile game development company, founded in 2010. Supercell has brought some of the most popular mobile games onto the market since their founding. These games include the likes of Brawl Stars, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale and more. Supercell games are available on both Apple iOS and Android operating systems.
Supercell Titles
Clash Royale is a tower-rush style mobile game where the goal is to destroy your opponent’s towers by depleting their health with different troops and spells. The game uses elements from card collecting games, tower defense games and multiplayer online battle arena games. Clash Royale games only last three to five minutes, which can result in an addictive game style. Players often feel as though they can play just ‘one more game’.
Brawl Stars is a multiplayer online battle arena and third person shooter game developed by Supercell and released in 2018. Players collect a multitude of ‘brawlers’ who possess different abilities. Players can use these brawlers to play different game modes. Brawl Stars utilizes a similar time format to Clash Royale, making matches last around three minutes. Brawl Stars was Supercell’s highest grossing game last year, amassing over 94 million dollars in gross revenue in 2024.
Clash of Clans is a mobile strategy game released in 2012 by Supercell. Players can build their base and attack other players for loot to further their own progress. Clash of Clans was the breakout success for Supercell as an organization. Clash of Clans has grossed 5.8 billion dollars since its release, making it the fifth highest grossing mobile game of all time.
Generations Of Players
Supercell has built a legacy in the mobile gaming community. The games they have produced have proven to have a substantial staying power with not only high schoolers, but older generations as well.
Thomas Oien, a senior at Owatonna High School, has been enjoying Supercell games for over eight years. Thomas Oien said, “I love going into History class and playing Brawl Stars with my friends.” The competitive and communal aspects keep high school students hooked on the game.
Marc Oien –Thomas Oien’s father– also plays supercell games. Marc Oien believes that the cyclical nature of the games keep users engaged. Marc Oien said, “It’s like a never ending, infinite cycle. Even though it feels like you’re succeeding, they do a good job at continuing to make improvements.”
Craig Oien –Thomas Oien’s grandfather– has been playing Clash of Clans for 11 years, even creating multiple accounts in order to play more. Craig Oien’s favorite memory regarding a Supercell game was showing Thomas how to do an attack in Clash of Clans.
Supercell games are very accessible, even to grandparents. “It’s easier for someone who is not as sophisticated with going online,” Craig Oien said.
Impact In School
The social nature of Supercell games is often what makes them so appealing to high schoolers. Nolan Ginskey, a senior at Owatonna High School, has been playing Supercell games for eight years. The short length of Supercell games leads them to be ideal candidates for distraction during class.
Ginskey said that school is “probably the majority of where I play, just because school isn’t as interesting as Supercell games.” While students will usually prioritize important work, during daily work days, they will opt to play games with their friends.
Mr. Jake Kringen is a social studies teacher at OHS. Kringen at age 26, is well acquainted with Supercell games, having played them in high school and college. Kringen is aware of the pros and cons of Supercell games. “As a player, but also as an educator, I see the double edged sword of supercell games as a distraction” Kringen said.
Supercell games have been designed to keep users on for ‘one more game’. The addictive, cyclical and social nature of these games is what has made them popular across generations over more than a decade.
