All the way from Copenhagen, Denmark, 17 year old Sofie Bjeverskov has made Owatonna High School her home for the year. As part of the Shives family, she is diving into American life like she has dreamed of doing since she was just a little girl.
Back home, Bjeverskov’s life was filled with family, friends, and animals—she has three siblings, three dogs, and even a horse she can not wait to hug again when she returns home in June. “The first thing I’m going to do when I get back is go straight to the stable and see my horse,” she said with a smile.
Music is a huge part of Sofie Bjeverskov’s life. From going to lots of concerts, to loving to sing, to playing guitar and piano, and even writing her own songs. She’s also interested in cheer and musical theatre. She recognizes Ms. Asmus for being a blessing that has helped her in tough times so far this year. Grateful is an understatement for how Sofie feels for meeting her this year and looks forward to choir class everyday.
So far, Bjeverskov has loved some American classics, especially apple pie, but she still misses “Friday Mexican nights” with her family and her favorite Danish sweets and licorice.
One of her favorite parts about being here has been the school spirit from helping the cheerleaders at football games to feeling the energy of the crowd, it’s something she says is much bigger than back home. “I was surprised by how nice everyone is and how much team spirit there is here,” she said.
School has been a learning experience too. In Denmark, students graduate after 9th grade and then choose whether to continue to “gymnasium,” which is like high school or go on their own path and not continue school. Sofie hopes to come back to the U.S. to study in New York someday as part of her journey.
Challenges like homesickness, adjusting to a new host family, and the language barrier have shaped Sofie. She is very proud of how she is stayed positive and independent though. “I know how much I’m going to gain from this…and I know once I have to leave, I’m going to miss it.” Bjeverskov explains.
Before heading home, Sofie plans to travel around the U.S., visiting Los Angeles, Montana, North Carolina, and New York. She’s especially excited for her first Thanksgiving and an American Christmas. In Denmark, the big celebration happens on the 24th instead of the 25th, so she’s excited to experience it differently this year.
Sofie fits right in, here in Owatonna, as her laughter and smile are so contagious. Her joy and open heart have brought a little extra sunshine to Owatonna High School, and she is sure to leave behind memories as bright as the ones she is taking home.
