When construction workers started work on the new Owatonna High School, everyone pictured a parking lot that just worked. Big, open lanes, entrances, clearly marked spots. It was supposed to make life easier for students and staff, especially with more people coming in every year. But now that the school is open and everyone is settled into their routines, the reality feels different. The lot that was supposed to be simple and stress-free has actually turned into one of the schools biggest headaches. Every morning, the rush of student drivers puts the design to the test, and you can not help but wonder if the planners really nailed it.
Director of Facilities, Infrastructure and Security Bob Olson quoted, “We did a traffic study and we knew it would be busy twice a day, mainly once a day, and that’s after school, when everybody’s leaving. So whether we like it or not, it’s going to be busy.”
When the bell rings at 2:50 at Owatonna High School, everything outside turns into a mess. The parking lot just can not handle the rush cars jammed up, everyone fighting to squeeze through two lousy exits. It is supposed to fit almost a thousand vehicles, but the way traffic backs up, you would never guess it. Some days, students sit stuck for 15, even 20 minutes, just to escape the lot and get to the street. Buses, parents, student drivers are all crammed into the same tight corridors. By the time you finally inch your way out, that quick drive home you imagined is long gone. What is left is a lot of frustration and a whole lot of wasted time.
Kowsar Ali stated, “Yes! The parking lot was designed in a way that slows down traffic and consumes time as you are trying to get out.”
Owatonna High School’s parking lot has signs and painted lines to help drivers out, but OHS does not do much to stop the daily traffic jams. Even when students follow the rules, cars end up stuck in long lines because the lot just is not built for this much traffic all at once. The exits get especially bad. Buses, parents, and student drivers all crowd the same spots, so signs really can not solve it. Most days, students just have to be patient, pick the right moment, or hope they get lucky if they want to get out quickly. Clear signs help a little, but they’re nowhere near enough to fix the bigger traffic mess.
Staff Qamar Hersi said, “We actually have a lot of space for parking, which is really helpful. However, I do wish that the staff had a different exit. Sometimes we have to attend different meetings right after school, and the slow traffic makes it hard to leave on time.”
OHS set up a separate lane just for buses, but it does not solve the problem. When the bell rings at 2:50, everyone ends up squeezing through the same exits. It is a mess. If you are not right up front, you are stuck waiting. The parking lot is packed tight, so drivers have to inch around each other just to get out. The whole system was supposed to make things smoother and keep buses apart, but in reality, students still get trapped in a slow, frustrating jam every afternoon.
The parking lot at OHS looks efficient on paper, but anyone who has tried to leave at the end of the day knows it is a mess. The exits clog up fast, the lanes inside are too narrow, and there’s barely any signage to steer people in the right direction. What should be a quick trip out turns into a daily headache for students, staff, and bus drivers. Sure, staggered dismissals, clearer signs, maybe even another exit any of that would help. But honestly, the setup just does not work. So people do what they always do: inch forward, scan for a gap, and cross their fingers they won’t spend the afternoon trapped in another endless jam.
In the end, the parking lot really puts everyone’s patience to the test. Even when the bell rings, cars line up fast, lanes get jammed, and everyone squeezes through the same exit. It turns into a daily frustration for students just trying to get home. A few tweaks like fixing the traffic flow or letting groups out at different times would help the parking lot. Fixing the problems in the Owatonna High School parking lot matters. It is not just about smoother traffic or keeping people safe, it is about making life easier for everyone who comes and goes, whether they are students, staff, or visitors. With some smart changes, we can set up a parking system that actually works for the whole school community, both now and down the road.
