During Huskies Give Week, buckets with pop tab symbols appeared in Owatonna High School’s hallways. Their purpose might seem modest or even vague, but the buckets were used to collect small aluminum pull tabs from beverage and food cans. Yet, these buckets represent a powerful, decades-long tradition of community support that turns a discarded item into help for families in need.
The tabs are collected for the Ronald McDonald House Southeastern MN and Western WI, in Rochester, MN. Since the 80s, this non-profit has operated a 72-room facility providing essential services that promote healing when children are receiving critical healthcare. As stated by the Ronald McDonald House, “Serving families with children receiving treatment in the intensive care units, the House offers families a place to rest and regroup, steps away from their child.” To fund this mission, the organization relies on community-driven programs, the most fruitful? The pop tab program.
The behind-the-scenes process is fairly simple. They first collect from families, schools and businesses that save the pop tabs from aluminum cans. Secondly, volunteers then bring the collected tabs to a recycling facility. Thirdly, the tabs which are mostly made from high-quality, pure aluminum are then exchanged for cash. Lastly, all proceeds directly support the operating cost of the Ronald McDonald House.
While a single tab may seem insignificant, the collective effort is substantial. The Ronald McDonald House states, “Each year, our Pop Tab Program raises between $10,000-$15,000 for Ronald McDonald House Southeastern MN and Western WI.” That translates directly into nights of stay and warm meals for families who need it most.
The ripple effect can be seen in OHS. In order to pitch in on the effort of this Huskies Give Week, Link Crew, a student mentorship club, lined the halls of OHS with buckets as shown. The significance of the buckets in the hallways extends beyond financial contribution. Link Crew member, Mickenzie Richer, states, “It’s a simple way to help people, I would love to do this all of the time.” This sentiment highlights the program’s core strength; building community. The buckets provide an accessible way for every student and staff member to participate in a common cause.
The next time a bucket is in the hall, or someone pulls a tab from a can, remember it is adding to a collective effort that offers comfort and supports families during their most challenging times. It’s a simple, powerful reminder that one can be part of something bigger.
