Students who are looking to join a school club are most likely looking for fun and engaging groups that look good on college applications and resumes that will actually prepare them for life after graduation. DECA is a club that covers it all. Those involved will develop real world skills, confidence and relationships that will benefit them no matter the career they choose to look into.
DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a global nonprofit organization involving high school and college students. Normally, it is filled with those who want to learn more about the marketing, finance, hospitality and management fields. However, there are many students who aren’t looking into business careers and just want to have a good time. OHS senior Amelia Baldwin states what she’s learned from DECA; “I’ve learned the importance of having skills in the business field. I use these skills every day, and it allows us to be more successful.” Here at the OHS, it is one of the most involved clubs with 140 students signed up. The main advisor is business teacher, Mr. Bradley Scharber.
This club provides hands-on experiences most business classes don’t offer. Practicing and competing in events like marketing campaigns, mock interviews and decision making role-play scenarios help students learn how to work under pressure and communicate. DECA can build friendships through participation and partner events.
Participating in the organization will help improve your public speaking, quick judgement and team decision making skills. DECA is not limited to one place of interest, but many all over the business fields. There are different types of projects and events that are available to participate in. For example, marketing campaigns and innovation plans are great opportunities to learn more about the background behind the marketing major.
Whether a friend is interested in the business field or not, DECA is a great place to learn essential life skills. The more time spent in DECA the better! Sign up next year as soon as possible to build amazing relationships, business experience and a fun time.
