The first semester ends on Jan. 16th, where students and staff at Owatonna High School are reflecting on how the end of the semester impacts academics, stress levels, and daily routines. The end of a semester often brings a mix of relief and pressure, as final assessments wrap up and grades are finalized. While some see the semesters end as a chance for a fresh start, others find it challenging due to school-work and extracurricular’s.
Junior Ally Vandenbroeke said “I would say one of the biggest things is being stressed out about all the extra work, because, especially with the snow day that we just had, we’re kind of cramming things last minute which can be stressful.”
However, the end of the semester can create added pressure for students. With finals, projects, and major assignments coming up this week, many students feel overwhelmed trying to manage their time effectively. Balancing academics with extracurricular activities, jobs, and personal responsibilities can make this period of time hard. For some students, the face past of the final weeks leaves little room for rest, which can negatively affect focus and mental health.
Despite these challenges, many students appreciate the sense of relief that comes with the semester ending. Completing classes and receiving final grades gives students a clear understanding of their progress and accomplishments. This can be motivating, as it allows students to move forward without having to worry about unfinished assignments. For others, the end of the semester provides a much needed mental reset and an opportunity to start fresh with new goals and improved study habits.
Senior Yasimin Maow stated, “I’m going to miss the class Foundations in Emergency Care next semester because it’s really fun, and I really love the teacher. He’s really great. And honestly, I’m excited for next semester’s classes anyway, but I will miss this class. Everyone here is so kind.
In addition to students, teachers are also affected by the end of the semester. Teachers are preparing students for finals while completing grading and providing feedback in a limited amount of time. This period can be demanding, but it allows teachers to reflect on what worked well during the semester and what could be improved. The semester’s end marks an important transition for both students and staff, shaping how the rest of the school year moves forward.
Overall, the end of the semester brings a mix of positive and negative experiences to Owatonna High School. While it offers students a sense of completion and a chance to reset academically, it can be a stressful and demanding time. Understanding these different perspectives helps explain why the semester’s end continues to be an important moment for the high school, influencing both learning and well being as students move ahead.
