ChatGPT has become a big part of our lives, whether you use it everyday or have just heard about it, sooner rather than later we will all become accustomed to it. Some people view ChatGPT as this helping tool, used to brighten ideas or make dreams become a reality. Others argue that ChatGPT is only used for cheating and that it’s a weak resource to rely on.
Students at OHS argue about ChatGPT, is it cheating or helpful? Senior Andrew Beaver said, “Some classes like yearbook no, but with other classes yes.”
Using it in classes like Yearbook can help raise ideas and topics, fluently being able to research under that topic confidently. Other classes that require more personal thought can be difficult to use ChatGPT comfortably in without it being seen as cheating.
Sophomore Chole Heim said, “ChatGPT is definitely cheating if you are using it for assignments and tests but not if you are using it for ideas, I used it this morning for my outfit.”
A number of students enjoy engaging in ChatGPT because it gives them thought starters
and opinions when asked.
Some teachers have a different outlook on ChatGPT. Teachers believe in using it for ideas and as a reference can be beneficial. It helps them get a deeper insight into certain topics for class.
Ms. Kimberly Penning said, “Using ChatGPT as a resource is not cheating. I like to use it sometimes to get almost a second opinion.” Admin is only against ChatGPT when it’s being used as a cheating tool.
OHS, Dean Of Students Brent Hawkins said, “If you are copy and pasting into a source, yes, it is viewed as academic dishonesty. But as a reference it can totally be helpful.”
ChatGPT is really seen as a tool in all categories, whether it’s seen as cheating or not is based on opinion and first hand experience.
