Many people think that talent only matters if you are successful or if you come out on top. But winning is not the only way to measure talent. Talent is about growth and effort, not just trophies.
Most high school coaches praise the fact of getting better at sport but are also focused on turning you into a better person who can fight through adversity and grow into a better human being.

Sophomore on the soccer team Logan Wilker says, “Coach Grubish always praised getting better as a person and emphasized life lessons rather than winning every game. He cared about developing our team for the future whether that was for jobs in the future or continuing our soccer career.¨
Some people believe talent comes from genetics. They argue that certain people are born with natural advantages, like height for basketball players or someone who has a perfect singing voice. For example, athletes like LeBron James are often praised for their natural physical gifts. These genetic traits can give someone a head start.
Other people believe talent is built through failure, practice, and hard work. They think anyone can become talented if they are willing to put in enough effort. A good example is Michael Jordan, who was cut from his high school varsity basketball team but used that failure as motivation to improve. His story shows that effort and determination can turn potential into greatness.
The Owatonna football team had tremendous success last year going undefeated in the regular season and

Senior Football player Elijah Black speaks about the different atmosphere from last year’s season to this season. ¨Last year was a whole different atmosphere. Everyone was invested, it was easier to be invested when we were winning, we all believed we were gonna win state compared to this year when we went 0-3 and suddenly no one was invested. After this we rallied together and finished the season 5-5.¨ .
Winning does not define whether someone is talented. Sometimes talented people lose because of stronger competition, bad luck or small mental mistakes. What truly shows talent is consistent improvement, dedication, and the ability to learn from mistakes.
Talent is not only valid when you win. Talent is shown in growth, perseverance, and commitment. Winning may prove success, but effort and improvement prove true talent.
