Homework has always been a normal part of school, but a lot of students are starting to question if it’s really helping or just making things more stressful. I think homework should be reduced, not completely eliminated because too much of it can hurt students more than it helps, adding more things to do on top of what you may have assigned already. At the same time there are still some good reasons why homework is assigned.
Sudeysi Ismail says “Homework can sometimes be bad because students have alot on their hands already school just adds on to that” Students already spend around 7 hours a day in school. Many of us have sports, jobs, or things going on at home. When teachers assign a lot of homework, it can feel overwhelming and leave students with little free time. This can lead to stress and not getting enough sleep. Sudeysi also says ” Teacher should try to set time in class aside to work on it they can ask for help as well” School should be about learning, not just always having work to do. Students need time to relax and have a life outside of school too.
Another reason homework should be reduced is because not all of it is helpful. Sometimes it feels like busy work instead of something that should benefit your learning. When students don’t see the point they are less likely to try. Some students just rush through it or copy answers just to finish which doesn’t really help them learn anything.
English Teacher, Daniel Leer says “Homework can teach time management and work ethic,” Homework shouldn’t be completely gone. Some homework is useful especially when it helps students practice what they learned in class or study for tests. Practicing can help you remember things better. Leer also says ” There is a possibility that excessive homework can add to kids stress levels and impact mental health” Homework can also help students learn responsibility and manage their time, which are important skills for later in life.
Homework can also help teachers know if students understand the material or not. If students never do work outside of class it might be harder for teachers to see who needs help. Some students also need extra practice to really understand a topic and homework can help with that.
Homework should not be completely eliminated but it should be reduced. Teachers should focus on giving assignments that actually help instead of just giving a lot of work. This way students can still learn and do well in school, while also having time to rest and do other things outside of school.
