With summer coming up, it’s easy to have no goals or plans and just end up being lazy and doomscrolling for hours a day. Summer can be a time to make memories, improve yourself, and enjoy time off from school. It can also be a time when people become lazier simply because they can’t figure out what to do.
There are an unlimited number of things people can do in the summer, and many types of activities they might want to try. Since there are so many things to do, for every type of activity there’s a top 3.

With Friends:
- Have a bonfire – Bonfires with friends are always fun, especially with music. You get to talk about life and memories together and have the deepest conversations.
- Game night – For competitive people, this is highly recommended. Every game night has so much laughter and connecting.
- Join a sports tournament – If you and your friends are looking for something spontaneous to do, this is it. You can just have fun trying to win something together and maybe go out to eat afterwards.
Outside:
- Night games – It will be like re-living the best childhood memories if you’re in the moment. Whether it’s Ghost in the Graveyard, manhunt, or any other neighborhood game, it’s always fun.
- Look at the sky – Whether it’s morning, afternoon, or night, looking at the sky and being in nature at any time of day slows life down and makes it more peaceful.
- Take a walk – This can also be a reset to your day, being able to take it all in and enjoy the weather.
Inside:
- Learn a hobby – It could be learning an instrument or doing something that helps you chill and be happy.
- Play board games or cards – If you’re in the mood for this one, especially if you do it with loved ones, it surprisingly makes some of the best memories.
- Watch your favorite shows – It could be sports or a series, but these are always a great thing to do when feeling lazy. This one is great unless it takes up too much time.
In Owatonna:
- Go downtown – There’s so much to do downtown, and you’ll never run out of things to do. You can go to the park, go to the shops, or just walk around, but with the right people, this could be a highlight of the summer.
- Get ice cream – There’s nothing like a sweet treat on a summer day.
- Go to the fair – Owatonna hosts the biggest county fair in the state of Minnesota, and it’s arguably one of the best weeks of the summer, every single summer.
Misc.
- Watch 4th of July fireworks – This one is pretty self-explanatory. It’s always a classic.
- Go to a lake – You can do countless things, especially if you have a boat. Tubing, jumping off the boat, games in the water, and so many things that you can look back on.
- Make a bucket list – There’s truly nothing better than making a personal list of your favorite things.
Student favorites:
