This year has been full of good and bad times as well as the adventurous and slow ones, but what’s most important is remembering all of them and how it shaped your school year! This year built my character and made me get out of my shell. As the 2025-2026 school year comes to an end, students at Owatonna High School are preparing for one of the most exciting times of the year: summer break.
After months of homework, tests, sports, and busy schedules, the final days of school are filled with mixed emotions. Many students are excited for warm weather, vacations, and time with friends, while others feel emotional about saying goodbye to teachers, classmates, and seniors graduating this year. Senior, Amal Mohamed said, “One thing I’ll miss about being in high school is being able to fool around, being a kid is what made it enjoyable.”
Throughout the year, students participated in sports, music, theater, clubs, and other activities that helped make the school year memorable. From spring sports to concerts and prom, the school stayed active until the very end. As lockers are cleaned out and classrooms empty, many students are already thinking about how they will spend their summer.
Summer in Owatonna offers plenty of opportunities for students and families to enjoy the outdoors and local events. The city hosts activities such as Downtown Thursdays, the Owatonna Farmers Market, softball tournaments, and community celebrations at the Steele County Fairgrounds. Local parks, trails, and lakes will once again become popular spots for biking, swimming, hiking, and spending time with friends. Soon to be Senior, Ramala Dahir said, “I will work on my extracurricular activities; working on ACT practice and focusing on what I’m gonna do my senior year.”
Many students plan to work summer jobs, travel, attend camps, or simply relax after a stressful school year. Others will participate in summer sports, swimming lessons, and recreational programs offered through Owatonna Parks and Recreation. For some students, summer is a chance to make memories before returning to school in the fall. For seniors, it marks the beginning of adulthood and new responsibilities.
Teachers and staff are also looking forward to a well-deserved break. After spending the school year helping students succeed, summer gives them time to recharge and prepare for another year. Even though many students are excited for summer freedom, there is also a sense of nostalgia as another school year comes to a close, seeing some people for the last time.
The ending of the school year always feels special because it represents both an ending and a new beginning. Whether students are heading off to college, starting summer jobs, going on vacation, or spending time at home, this summer will be filled with new experiences and memories. As the halls of Owatonna High School quiet down for the season, students can finally enjoy the sunshine, relaxation, and excitement that summer brings.
