On Friday, Feb. 19, fourteen wrestlers competed at the individual section tournament in attempt to make it to the state tournament. For some, it would be another chance to appear at state, while others would be wrestling their last match of their high school career. On the second day of the tournament, twelve of them were still competing. After a long day of battling it out with other schools, seven boys were able to place in the top two and qualify for state. Head coach Cliff Casteel said, “We qualified more wrestlers than any other team in Section 1 AAA and luckily for us, all seven will be returning next year.” The seven wrestlers that made it to state are: Peyton Robb, Cade King, Tanner Cole, Bryce Goodwin, Griffin Thorn, Brandon Moen and Riley Becker. The individual state tournament runs Friday, Feb. 26 -Feb. 27 at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul.
STATE UPDATE: Tanner Cole placed third, Brandon Moen and Peyton Robb won State Championships in their weight class. Also head coach Cliff Casteel decided to retire from coaching the huskies and this was his last season coaching for Owatonna.
