Girls golf: Swinging for success
April 22, 2016
The Owatonna Girl’s Golf team didn’t know what kind of talent they had going into this season at the varsity level, but they do now. With a plethora of talent from the six player varsity lineup, the Owatonna girls golf team is on track for a big season. Anchoring down the lineup are returning letter winners and current seniors Maddie Zulk and Jayce Bogen. With a talented group of juniors and underclassmen, the girls have a well built squad ready to hit the links. Head Coach Tim Hunst said, “We have a great group of girls on this year’s team. Each player will do what she needs to when a teammate needs help, on and off the course. We have a true team in the fact that all of the players can contribute on any given day.”
Already participating in two pre-conference play invitationals, the Huskies finished within the top five in both of their contests. Putting up good early season scores are earning the Huskies credit as a contender in the Big 9. They look forward to pushing themselves up into top contention in the conference this year. Bogen said, “Expectations are rising as we are trying to improve every single week and compete for the Big 9 championship.”
They kicked their regular season off on Thursday, April 14 at the Red Wing Invitational where they placed 4th. The girls then headed up to Faribault on Friday, April 15 to the Faribault Invitational where they placed 5th. With a few days of practice to prepare, the Huskies went headfirst into their Big 9 competition the next week. On Tuesday, April 19 they hosted a dual against Mankato East at the Owatonna Country Club, taking home their first conference win of the year with a final score of 396 to 416. The Huskies traveled up to Faribault again for a dual against the rival Falcons on Thursday, April 21. They beat Faribault 373 to 419, notching their 2nd conference win.
The Huskies are back in action on Monday, April 25 at Chaska for an invite before continuing conference play on Thursday, April 28 at home against Winona.
