13 reasons why we’re all losing sleep
… Because we are watching 13 Reasons Why
April 7, 2017
The hit new show that came to Netflix last Friday was 13 Reasons Why, based off of Jay Asher’s novel published in 2007 with the same title. The plot revolves around a series of tapes addressed to 13 individuals with a grief filled, emotional twist. Many were highly anticipating its release on Netflix March 31, 2017.
The main characters of the show are Hannah Baker (played by Katherine Langford) and Clay Jensen (played by Dylan Minnette), a quiet, shy, high school student who has a role on the school board and had a crush on Hannah from the start. The series takes place in Liberty high school after Hannah Baker’s death. The main character Clay Jensen received a series of 13 tapes recorded by Hannah before her suicide explaining the 13 reasons why she made the decision to take her own life. The only rules being listen, and pass it on. Clay Jensen is the second to last person to receive the tapes. Through the process of listening to the tapes, Clay Jensen seems to take everything to heart and begins to panic, figuring out what to do to the group of students that are involved in the tapes try to keep the tapes a secret. It has many twists and turn throughout every episode.
The book and tv series are not identical, they have many similarities and some differences due to the fact that tv show is a different approach to the iconic novel of 2007. Due to the 10 year gap difference and technological differences from the novel, the show is a lot more intimate and expands the story outside of just Hannah and Clay. The series have many differences and similarities, instead of Clay taking his time through every tape in the show, in the book he finishes all the tapes in one night. Clay also has hallucinations/ flashbacks? every time he listens to the tapes in the show and does not have anything happen in the book. The book was in first person and felt like a conversation between Hannah and Clay and every now and then getting interrupted by the outside world. The show 13 Reasons Why has earned a great rating on Netflix and is worth checking out if you have the time.
