Change is on the way
Change is Now is a student run group who strives to make a more positive OHS. It all started when Nick Hagen and Bryce Knutson were talking about how they could make a better environment at OHS, and realized that others had the same ideas. The two started planning and added more members. The group founders are Hagen, Knutson, Jasmynn Stechmann, Nick Sande and Kjerstin Anderson wanted to create a foundation for future growth of the group. It is known that integration into the OHS community can take time, but one message can take effect immediately- little changes can happen right now. They have began by meeting with administration and counselors to show that their organization will work with the people, for the people.
Together they formed three pillars to improve OHS’s atmosphere. The three pillars are: open-mindedness, community, and compassion. Hagen said, “Sitting around not doing anything was too frustrating.”
So far, they have hosted academic support sessions for new students trying to change OHS. In the near future, they will host academic support sessions focused on acts of kindness, community service and increase involvement in other organizations by bringing them together to plan and promote their own events. On Wednesday, Oct. 25 Change is Now will lead an academic support to chalk OHS.
The next step for Change is Now is to organize student membership so they can take action. The five founders realize the importance of action rather than words, so in the near future more information will come out about how to join. Change is Now is looking for people who want to make a positive difference at OHS. Anyone looking to join should contact one of the five founders. For now, it is easy to start with a smile in the halls, opening doors for others, being respectful to teachers and using manners. If everyone started making little changes at OHS, the school can already see large results.
