Things get even stranger

Dom Nelson

Stranger things is a sci-fi masterpiece written and produced by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer. They are also known as the Duffer Brothers. Stranger Things follows a group of four young kids in the 80’s – Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb Mclaughlin) and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). More characters are introduced throughout the seasons.

The show has gotten much of it’s praise for it’s retro feel. The show takes place in 1983-1984 and captures all the fads of that decade. Including lots of movie nods. Some of which being Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, The Goonies, The Terminator, Aliens, Jaws, It, The Exorcist, Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club. In season 2, Dustin can be seen wearing a brontosaurus hoodie from the science museum of Minnesota. The museum noticed and decided to put it back up for sale on the website. Since then, the website has crashed multiple times from people trying to order the hoodie. The hoodie sold out within one day.

Stranger Things is critically acclaimed and has won 21 awards, and has been nominated for 79. Some notable wins are outstanding casting for a drama series (primetime emmy), show of the year and best actor in a show (MTV movie and TV awards), and best new TV series (IGN summer movie awards).

The hit show Stranger Things is back, and it is stranger than ever. With nine 45 minute episodes, the second season is just as captivating as the first. If you haven’t seen the first season, *DO NOT KEEP READING, SPOILERS AHEAD*.

To recap the previous season:  Season one begins with Will being captured by an unknown specimen. The other kids began a search for him. On the way they run into a little girl who was used as a lab experiment. This girl is nicknamed Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), and this nick came from the number branded on her wrist. The other characters quickly find out that Eleven is different than a bald headed, introverted girl that she seemed to be.

Eleven had acquired telekinesis while being used as a test subject. She brought disputes between the four boys, but a new, more serious problem arose when Eleven opened up the gate to the upside down. The upside down is an alternate universe, and it is filled with lizard like monsters roaming around. While opening the gate, Eleven let out a monster nicknamed “The Demogorgon.” The monster was based off of Dungeons and Dragons, a popular game in the 80’s. The Demogorgon was the monster that kidnaped Will. The season finished with Jim Hopper (David Harbour), the sheriff, and Will’s mom Joyce (Winona Ryder) finding Will captured in the upside down. At the same time Eleven took down the monster, but she went down with it.

Season two picked up on Halloween 1984, which is exactly where season one left off. Will seemed okay, and life had returned back to as normal as it could get. Suddenly Will starts to experience random flips between the upside down and the real world. The season continues with the same group of kids, but this time with a new initiative.

According to ew.com, Will (Schnapp) said,“It is a lot darker and scarier than the first [season].” Each episode is captivating with a twist ending, and it motivates the viewer to keep watching. Stranger Things doesn’t fail to satisfy the watcher. Season one and season two can be watched with a Netflix subscription.
