The teachers at the OHS are amazing at their jobs, but they also lead interesting lives outside of these walls. This series is about diving deeper into their interests, reasons behind teaching, and the path that lead them to Owatonna. It was originally published on the OHS Magnet Instagram account in order to reach a broader range of students and community members.

  • Before teaching Mrs. Sager held some nonchalant jobs like sending people to the moon at Disneyland and working for the United Nations in Austria. She became interested in teaching because she said, “I like kids more than adults.”

  • Before deciding to pursue a career in education Mr. Stormo wanted to be a fighter jet pilot. Unfortunately for him he had a heart murmur so they would not let him, fortunately for us he then became a teacher. Growing up Stormo lived on a farm, he was not fond of most of it but there was one aspect he enjoyed. Stormo said, “I still like young heifers, and feeding the calves from a bottle.”

  • You can catch Mrs. Fink running, playing tennis and drooling over Luke Perry. She said, “We honored the life of this great man last week, RIP Luke Perry.” Fink also enjoys watching hockey with her husband and supporting the OHS Student Council.

  • Coaching was what drew Mr. Solie to teaching. He had assumed that he would soon grow tired of the profession but ended up loving it. He said, “I enjoy tormenting kids.” When he is not pushing students to their full potential he hunts, fishes, and is an avid member of the Rust Rackets Tennis Club.

  • Outside of school Mr. Leer keeps busy playing guitar, hanging out with his kids and running. He continues teaching because he enjoys his colleagues, course material, and said, “Teaching kids keeps me young.”

  • After school hours, you can find FACS teacher, Mrs. Getting, reading books by her favorite author, Kate Morton. When she isn’t reading historical novels, Getting is furthering her hobby of quilting. She said she pursued her career in teaching because “I just love teenagers, I love hanging out with them.”

  • When Mr. Pierce isn’t golfing, traveling or hanging out with his family he is a business teacher. Pierce originally was a business major but due to the recession that was not a profitable or enjoyable field. He had a passion for coaching and decided to get his teaching certificate. Pierce said “My favorite part of teaching is interacting with the kids.” so he has not looked back.
