Jordan Peele’s marveloUS second film

Ben Johnson, Writer

Newly released movie, Us, directed by Jordan Peele, is a standalone mystery/thriller movie, designed to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat throughout the duration of the film. The movie follows Adelaide Wilson, played by Lupita Nyong’o, as her and her family return to the lakeside home she grew up in as a child. The vacation is interrupted by a family of four that breaks into their home on the first night. The realization that these invaders may be their doppelgangers with frightening intentions, gets the movie rolling.

I thought the movie was awesome, it was crazy scary but well worth the watch.

Us received a 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb and a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. With expectations high after Peele’s first Oscar-winning movie, Get Out, Peele delivered in a way almost all audiences and critics could get behind. He began his entertainment career as a comedy sketch writer and actor on both Mad TV and Comedy Central: his knowledge in the field influenced some of his decisions for the film, as he blends in dark comedy and satire throughout the entirety of the movie. Bobby LePire from FilmThreat.com said, “Peele’s direction contains a tight grasp on horror and comedy, balancing both perfectly. His game cast shines brightly in their dual roles, and the ending makes the whole endeavor well worth your time.” While Us wasn’t as highly commended as his first movie, Peele still added a memorable film under his belt that aids in his recognition as an emerging writer and director.

This film is rated R, and is recommended to older audiences that are fans of all things horror and thriller. Senior Dakota Savoie said, “I thought the movie was awesome, it was crazy scary but well worth the watch.” Younger audiences may have a hard time handling some of the more intense scenes, and the movie would lose some of its appreciation as they might not understand some of the underlying plot advancements. Us came to Owatonna on March 22, 2019 and will be running through April 10th at the Northwoods Cinema 10 Theater.
