Team Allen posing after their first place victory

After last year’s successful Homecoming week at OHS, the homecoming committee made the decision to play volleyball instead of dodge ball in 2019. The games took place in the volleyball courts at Lava Burgers and Wings on Monday, Sept. 30.

Each grade was responsible for putting together their own teams. There was a total of eight teams signed up. Two teams of seniors, three teams of juniors, two teams of sophomores and one of freshman. Student council member, Camryn Bartz, said, “There are eight teams signed up, and a lot of kids are planning on coming as a student section to cheer on their friends.” The student section will create a positive environment for all the teams competing. Some of the senior girls participating in volleyball this year voiced their excitement saying it’s something new and they’re looking forward to playing sand volleyball.

When we got up 14-4 early in the match, I thought we might pull off the upset of a lifetime beating the seniors. Our team rallied together, and we kept the lead until the end.

— Lincoln Maher

Out of the eight teams participating,  only three teams could be victorious. Senior team Allen put up a great fight in the end, but the junior team “Team Disappointment”-ended up being too much in the end and took first place. Captain of team disappointment, Lincoln Maher, said, “When we got up 14-4 early in the match, I thought we might pull off the upset of a lifetime beating the seniors. Our team rallied together, and we kept the lead until the end.” Senior Team Knights came in third in a very close consolation match.  The championship match ended up being a blowout victory for Team Disappointment over Team Allen.

This is the first time OHS has done volleyball and first time holding it at Lava Burgers and Wings. OHS will now consider playing volleyball for the future homecomings.
