Finishing the season
March 4, 2020
With the season winding down, the young Owatonna Girls Basketball Team has taken a giant leap forward and are excited to make a section run. After a rough start to the season, the girls have picked up a few very big conference wins. The Huskies took a big win from Austin on Feb. 11, and have been playing very well ever since. The team will be finishing in the middle of the pack in the Big 9 this year, but they have had many promising moments and are excited to make a push in section play and see where their hard work will take them.
With many people playing at the top of their game right now, there have been a few standouts. Junior Sarah Kingland has been a great player all year and has started to find ways to score left and right. Junior Holly Buytaert has stepped up as the role of point guard and has been able to contribute a lot to her team. With only one senior, captain Sara Anderson, the team has had to look to her for both leadership and ability. Anderson has been a consistent player all year and is always someone the team relies on in late-game situations to make smart and heady plays. Kingland said, “We have really clicked as a team and I think we have a good chance to make a run in sections this year.” Everyone is excited to see what the team will do come sections.
With only a few games left in the season, the girls are looking to continue to jive together and make a section run. Assistant coach Dan Leer said, “I think we are playing our best basketball right now; girls are playing in their roles as a five and not as individuals.” Finishing the season with a first-round section loss the girls had a great year. With many ups and downs the season ended on a high note having a great season and time.
