OHS alum Ms. Cole returns to OHS as a business teacher

Betsy Cole

The OHS business department welcomes Ms. Betsy Cole as their newest teacher. Students can find her classroom located in C-303. Ms. Cole is an OHS graduate and originally went to Concordia-Moorehead where she double majored in English communications and art. Now she is enrolled at St. Mary’s for a master’s degree in education.

The reason Ms. Cole applied to OHS is because of the connections she’s had being an OHS graduate and long term subbing for Ms. Gendron and Mr. Friday last year. Ms. Cole said, “My experience working here last year was wonderful, it made me realize this is where I want to be.”

This year, Ms. Cole teaches career exploration, word processing, google suite and intro to business, all of them being quarter classes. She chose to teach business because of her previous work experience in the business market. Ms. Cole said, “I’ve had a few different careers and I’ve owned my own business, so being able to bring those experiences to the classroom will be very valuable.” Just like every other teacher, Ms. Cole has to adapt to hybrid and distance learning classes. Being a first year teacher makes it even more difficult, she said, “I have really awesome students who are able to adapt things. The most difficult part about hybrid and distance learning is I only get these kids in person for 17 days. With distance learning and the other protocols, it’s a lot harder building connections with my students.”

Outside of class, Ms. Cole loves theatre and has been involved in it for a while. In the last couple of years she’s helped with the theatre production here at OHS. She also loves spending time with her family which includes her husband, two kids, who are seven and ten years old, and a yellow lab puppy named Penny.
