What’s new with Disney+?

Nine months ago restrictions started to be imposed due to COVID-19, which left people scrambling for entertainment. Among many sources, Disney+ has been a force to be reckoned within the streaming service industry. Disney+ boasts nearly 7500 episodes and 500 films thus far and continuously adds more for variety. Released on Nov. 12, 2019, the streaming platform has around 75 million users, far surpassing the expectations for its first year.

The sudden spike of COVID-19 cases has led to many restrictions being imposed once again. Fortunately, Disney+ is releasing lots of new content in the upcoming weeks while everyone is at home. Previously, they released Onward sooner than expected and Artemis Fowl along with Mulan were directly added to Disney+. Some of this content includes Star Wars: The Mandalorian – Season 2, The Right Stuff, Marvel’s 616 and Simpsons Forever. Some of the popularity of Disney+ can be accredited to The Mandolorian and other exclusive shows and movies. OHS senior Derek Dunn said, “I am looking forward to season two of The Mandalorian because I have grown up watching Star Wars and really enjoyed the first season.”

Due to the company’s boost in popularity, it has been releasing old and new content more frequently. OHS History teacher Ms. Laura Epland said, “I love that Disney+ has all of my favorite movies from my childhood. I enjoy scrolling through the list of old movies and thinking back to family movie nights with my parents and brothers.” Disney+ allows many to revisit their childhood and watch movies like Toy Story, Home Alone and Up, giving it a very sentimental feel. OHS senior Jenna Spatenka said, “The fact that they have all of the old and new shows and movies on there makes it unique, there’s a really big sense of nostalgic feeling seeing all the old shows”.

Disney+ has been producing tons of content during COVID-19 with its new series’. In the past year, Disney has been very successful with its platform. Hopefully, with Christmas coming up they will add a plethora of titles to binge-watch with friends and family.
