As winter is coming to an end and the snow is starting to evaporate, it’s time for athletes to lace up spikes or cleats, grab their sticks, rackets or clubs and hop into action. With it being a hectic last year, athletes and coaches are eager to be able to participate in their spring sports again after not being able to last season.

With all spring sports back in play, athletes are excited to experience being back with their teammates. After the loss of bonding with the seniors last year, senior Nate Smith said, “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to compete again, but I think a lot of athletes will have a lot of work to put in to be ready.” Smith reflects on his loss of the seniors last year and is anxious to watch the younger classes rise and grow.

Coaches will have to modify on the fly to improve technique and drills to get their athletes’ competition ready after missing out on all of last year’s reps. Coach Jerry Eggermont is one of  the OHS track coaches. Eggermont said, “It will be interesting to see how athletes will perform with the loss of last year.”  It also comes with a life lesson. Eggermont said, “It should remind us that at any given moment in your life things can be taken away in a drop of a dime.” Athletes should be thankful to do what they do, because everyday is a gift.

Spring sports registration is open on the Owatonna Public Schools website, be sure to register by Friday, March 19.
