Doordash is a food delivery service that allows people to order their food and have someone go pick it up and deliver it to their doorstep. While lounging on the couch, someone grabs the food and brings it directly to the house. The customer makes his or her order then on the Doordash app a notification pops up, the dasher then picks up and drops off the food. It only takes around five to 10 minutes for the dasher to bring the food to the door. Dashers take tips from customers alongside a little pay from the Doordash company.  COVID-19 has many effects, one of the biggest ones was when restaurants closed down for long periods of time or only having to-go orders. Due to this restaurants had to find new ways to sell food. 

Doordash has grown greatly throughout this past year in Owatonna and nationally. Drew Kretlow said, “Doordash came in very handy during the pandemic. I used it a lot because we could not go out to restaurants and eat. It was another way for people to get food that they don’t have to make at home.” The growth of Doordash has helped thousands of people local and throughout the country. 

With the pandemic, many are trying to find ways to make money. School teachers among others find new ways to support their families. Mr. Jeremy Wood, a language arts teacher at OHS, became a Doordash employee during this summer. Mr.Wood said, “I worked Doordash this summer because my wife was pregnant with twins at the time, so I needed a side-gig and due to COVID people weren’t going out to eat very often, so I saw an opportunity for food delivery.”

Doordash was a huge help and opened up a lot of part-time jobs for people to make some money. Additionally, Mr.Wood said, “But, it served its purpose and brought some helpful additional income into my household. I could see it being a productive part-time job for a younger person.” Doordash like many other companies opened new ways to do life and to make extra money during a pandemic.

To become a dasher one must be at least 18 years old, have a driver’s license (unless in a larger metropolitan location), complete employment paperwork and consent to a background check. COVID-19 opened many new doorways for part time jobs. Doordash allowed restaurants to keep running and people to get food they do not  have to make themselves.
