This school year the students of Owatonna High School did not get to experience the usual homecoming week that they have in past years, the OHS Student Council came up with the idea to have two different homecoming weeks. Homecoming Part I took place from September 28, 2020 – October 2, 2020. Homecoming Part II , also known as the “Spring Fling,” will take place from May 24-28, and will include events throughout the week such as dress up days and nightly events.

Homecoming Part II will be a unique way that students can experience the best Homecoming they never had. Sophomore Reegan Lindholm is one of the head chairs for the “Spring Fling.” Lindholm said, “We wanted to have two parts hoping that with the second part we could do more than we could do with the first part with covid regulations. Now that there are less regulations we are able to have a dance and other events that were not allowed in the fall.”

Homecoming part two boasts a variety of events that all students can attend and have a good time while following COVID-19 regulations. Senior Grace Linders said, “We as a student council are so excited to celebrate homecoming part two this month! There will be lots of fun events throughout the week, and we hope to see all of you there!” It is sure to be a fun week where students can get back to a somewhat normal Homecoming week. Student council adviser, Sandra Justice, said “One of the things that has been hardest this school year is not being able to have events that aren’t restricted by COVID-19 regulations, so this is a good opportunity to have a full week similar to normal and for freshman to get the right high school experience and for seniors to get the right sendoff.”

The Homecoming part two weekly schedule goes as follows:

Monday, May 24 – “Country” dress up day at school.

Tuesday, May 25 – Jersey dress up day, followed by a free movie on the field, “The Sandlot” will be shown at 8:15 p.m. on the OHS football field.

Wednesday, May 26 – Distance Learning Day, the OHS Student Council will be doing social media shout outs for the pets of OHS. Wednesday night there will be an “Elementary Game Night” at Lincoln Elementary School from 6-9 p.m. where students can play all of their favorite games from elementary school such as Soccer, Pin Guard, Kickball, Four Square and many more.

Thursday, May 27- “Granola” (outdoorsy) dress up day at school. Thursday night there will be a Free Art Splash where students can bring artwork to display, and there will also be an open microphone for musical talents and poetry. The Art Splash will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Green Space in downtown next to Old Town Bagels.

Friday, May 28 – College dress up day, OHS students wear apparel from their favorite college and seniors are encouraged to wear clothes from the college they will be attending. Friday night will be the Powderpuff Football game at 7:30 p.m. Girls are encouraged to join their class’s football team and compete to see which grade has the best team. There is no number limit per team. The cost is $5.00 to play. The game will be followed by the “Last Chance Dance” which will take place in the OHS Tennis Court parking lot from 9:00 p.m. – 11:45 p.m. To enter, students will need $5.00 and their student ID.
