The OHS Volleyball team is off to a solid start to the season. With their win against Rochester John Marshall on  Thursday, Oct. 7, they now sit in fifth place in the Big 9 Conference. There are many new faces on the varsity team only returning four players from last year’s roster. The Huskies have faced a lot of adversity so far this season but have handled it very well.

With the lack of experience on the team, the Huskies have counted on captains and other senior leaders to show the younger girls the ropes. Senior Captain Leah Welker said, “The leadership on this team has been strong, especially with all of the adversity we’ve faced this season and I definitely think the leadership on the team has played into the success of our season. We have been having our most successful season in the recent past, and our leadership is definitely an attribute to that.” The upperclassmen on the team are very well respected by the younger players which have allowed them to have great team chemistry and win a fair amount of games.

The Huskies have very high hopes for the remainder of the season. Head Coach Tai Tolle said, “Our continual goal as we continue through the season is to learn something from each match we play to improve our competitiveness and use each practice intentionally to fine-tune our team skills: Put forth great effort to grow in a sport we all love, make memorable moments, and at the end of it all, have fun.” The Huskies hope to finish the season strong and roll into sections with a quality seed.

The Huskies’ next game is at Mankato West on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
